Meet Axl Kai Franco – A Bright Spark with a Big Future

At just nine years old, Axl Kai is already proving himself to be a curious, driven, and talented young man who shines both in and out of the classroom. 

Axl was born and raised here on Maui. He began his educational journey at the Makawao Drop-In Center with Ms. Angela and the Tutu and Me traveling  program pre school, where his love for learning first blossomed. From there, he started at Pukalani Elementary in kindergarten with Ms. Figueroa and worked his way up through first grade with Ms. Depaxxe, second grade with Ms. Stevens, and third grade with Ms. Clarke—where his outstanding academic performance and emotional maturity led his teachers and administrators to recommend he skip fourth grade. Today, Axl is thriving in 5th grade with Ms. Enriquez, and continues to participate in the school's Gifted and Talented Program.

Academically, Axl has always stood out. By third grade, he consistently earned “Meets with Excellence” across the board and tested at a 7th-grade level in both reading and math. His academic achievements and love for challenges made skipping 4th grade a natural next step.

But Axl is much more than just a student—he’s a well-rounded adventurer with a love for life. He’s been part of the chess club, where he was the youngest player ever accepted. He’s spent three years on the soccer field with Keiki Soccer Pros, trained in jiu-jitsu, and played two seasons of flag football. Recently, Axl discovered kitesurfing and quickly became the youngest kitesurfer on the beach! When he’s not catching the wind, you might find him dirt biking, skateboarding, surfing, or even horseback riding.

Music and creativity are also part of who Axl is. He’s been playing both the drums and the ukulele for the past two years, and he writes his own poetry and songs. His natural curiosity and eagerness to learn new skills make him a joy to be around—his sweet, generous nature shines as brightly as his accomplishments.

With such a wide range of passions and a remarkable dedication to learning, Axl has an exciting future ahead.
